OSS4 on Crunchbang

Hey everyone,

I'm a brand new member of the OSS forums. I'm glad a place like this exists! I have a simple, but seemingly poorly documented question regarding getting OSS4 to work under Crunchbang. I simply want to replace ALSA with it. In the tutorials I've come across so far, either one piece or another of information seems to be wrong and I'm never able to actually complete the installation.

Would one of you be able to walk me through the process of completely replacing ALSA with OSS? I'd appreciate it a lot!

1. Boot Arch Linux LiveCD.
2. Remove PulseAudio
3. Download the closed source package of OSS4 (together with manual) and install it.

Then you may try to install OSS4 on a Crunchbang LiveCD (if exists).

Crunchbang is said to be "a lightweight Debian based Linux distribution" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrunchBang_Linux

Before installing OSS4, you may need to install some "prerequisite packages":

Installing Prerequisite Packages
The second command is only necessary when building OSS4 from source. The third command contains some recommended packages.

OSS4 can be installed over ALSA. It is not necessary to unload ALSA.
Blacklisting of ALSA kernel modules is not necessary too.
Just remove PusleAudio, install "prerequisite packages", then you can install OSS4.

Try it on LiveCD. If it does not work, somebody else may try to reproduce your experiments.
