I've just had a success running OSS 3.99.4b on recent -current with no hacks whatsoever. I'll be updating the status as time goes by.

Try the OSS v4.0 beta version at http://www.opensound.com/test

You must uninstall the 3.99 version by typing /usr/lib/oss/scripts/uninstall.sh

No luck. I uninstalled 3.99 and pkg_add'd the beta. When it came to loading the module, the box rebooted. 3.99 at least gives a kernel panic.

oss-freebsd-v4.0rc2-170-i386 works fine on today's current.

@dev: please install into /usr/local instead of /usr and into /usr/local/etc instead of /etc. Yes, it is critical.

OSS utilities are part of the "core" system - and need to go in /usr/sbin and /sbin + /usr/bin. You can't have the system be in local because local may be remotely mounted.

We have done the right thing by putting OSS core utis into root file system.

We have done the right thing by putting OSS core utils into root file system.

This is not the way 3rd-party software is installed on FreeBSD, or any other modern BSD for that matter. We have plenty of ports that install kernel modules to study from. I can work with you to make a nice port, I'm ready to consider whatever conditions you specify.

Somewhere between January 15 and January 21 apparently the ABI was broken and I had to recompile OSS. It's now working great once again.
