OSS installation

Postby kobra196 » Fri Mar 29, 2013 5:01 pm

hi,

I had a sound problem in Ubuntu 12.10 and Mint 14 (no sound at all) and after reading this topic http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=61072 I decided to give it a go with OSS. After following most of the directions on this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound, now my onboard sound chip is recognized and I get a little noise on the speakers but still no sound in my applications (flash, system, etc). Now I don`t really have a clue on how to further achieve this. Can I get a little help from you?

According to the directions I disabled Alsa and PulseAudio, now how to proceed with the OSS modules?

If you want to get help on a technical forum, you may need to provide some technical information which may help to diagnose the problem. Right?
This was explained in that same manual for Ubuntu users: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenS ... al_Support

You may post, for example, the output from these commands:

Code: Select all
$ ossmix
$ ossinfo -v3
$ lspci -vnn
$ dmesg | grep oss
$ lsmod | grep oss
$ lsmod | grep snd

Does "osstest" play sound?

I hope this feedback is good for you... osstest did work I got sounds on nearly all the tests...

I have a 5.1 surround system with 3 of 5 speakers connected, I lost the other two... so only front left, right, and rear left connected.. and the sub..

in the test best performance was brought by audio engine 5 spdout0 (/dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/spdout0 (audio engine 5)), so is it possible to use that one to steer sound to the apps?? Again, I`m learning how sound in linux works, so I`m kind of guessing for words.. this helps immensely.. I hope you can help out a little more..

If "osstest" works, the playback is OK.
To have sound in your apps, you have to configure them for OSS4.
See: http://www.4front-tech.com/wiki/index.p ... _for_OSSv4
Some useful info is here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Open_Sound_System

Which sort of Linux Mint do you have?

On Linux Mint 14 Mate, you may want to install "mate-settings-daemon-gstreamer" as alternative to "mate-settings-daemon-pulse"

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get install mate-settings-daemon-gstreamer

To fix gstreamer on Linux Mint 14 Mate, you have to install "gstreamer1.0-plugins-good":

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-good

This will fix sound in Totem, Banshee, etc.

You may also want to install some other "gstreamer1.0-plugins" (bad, ugly) [codecs, etc.].

To prevent troubles with PulseAudio crap, you may want to install "libcanberra-gstreamer"

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get install libcanberra-gstreamer

READ THIS: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5206

5.1 surround works with OSS4. You may try it when everything else is fixed. There is a howto for "surround" on this forum.

You may try to fix basic things. Then we may discuss "sound quality", HiRes FLACs, DXD Waves, etc.

Since certain sound apps use "virtual mixer devices" of OSS4 (instead of "real devices"), it makes sense to test them too:

Code: Select all
$ osstest -V

see "man osstest":

Code: Select all
$ man osstest
          It is possible to test just one of the available  audio  devices  by
          giving  its  number on command line (for example osstest 1). Use the
          device index numbers reported by "ossinfo -a".

          Virtual mixer devices will not be tested. Use the  -V  command  line
          option to force test of virtual devices.

You may try:

Code: Select all
ossinfo -a

Then:

Code: Select all
$ osstest 0
$ osstest -V 0

$ osstest 1
$ osstest -V 1

$ osstest 2
$ osstest -V 2

[and so on]

Green = Front (output = playback)
Pink = Mic (input = recording)
Blue = Line-in (input = recording)

All of them can be used for playback and recording.

Some motherboards may not correctly initialize the jacks according
to their color and functionality but in general here's the
configuration that should generally be followed:

Orange = Center/LFE o Blue = Line-in
Black = Rear o Green = Front
Grey = Side o Pink = Mic

Some Azalia codecs support front panel connectors and so if you see
fp-green and fp-pink connectors, then these are for front panel
speaker and mic/line-in Jacks.

There is a function selector for most of the analog audio jacks (for example
connector.pink.mode). This selector is used to control if the jack is used
as an input (microphone or line in) or output (front, rear, side, speaker,
etc). http://manuals.opensound.com/usersguide ... audio.html

Re: OSS installation

Postby kobra196 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 7:33 am

Ok, thanks to that great post, thank you for that, I ve been making some progress...

I installed

libflashsupport (after compiling it for 64-bit)
libcanberra-gstreamer

and added sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gstreamer-developers/ppa
to be able to install gst-plugins-good but I couldn`t get it to work because apt-get couldn`t find the package.

Now I have some sound in flash applications but it uses "HD Audio play front /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0" which gives a lot of distortion. As a matter of fact only "HD Audio play spdif-out /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/spdout0 (device index 5)" seems to work flawlessly so if possible I`d like to use that for everything.. How do I achieve that? Do I alter the nodes as they are mentioned in ossinfo? Thank you for your attention...

Code: Select all
ossinfo -a

Audio devices
HD Audio play front               /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0  (device index 0)
HD Audio play rear                /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm1  (device index 1)
HD Audio play center/LFE          /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm2  (device index 2)
HD Audio play side                /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm3  (device index 3)
HD Audio play pcm4                /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm4  (device index 4)
HD Audio play spdif-out           /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/spdout0  (device index 5)
HD Audio play spdifout            /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/spdout1  (device index 6)
HD Audio rec mix                  /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcmin0  (device index 7)
HD Audio rec mix                  /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcmin1  (device index 8)

Nodes
  /dev/dsp -> /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0
  /dev/dsp_in -> /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0
  /dev/dsp_out -> /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0
  /dev/dsp_ac3 -> /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/spdout0
  /dev/dsp_mmap -> /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0
  /dev/dsp_multich -> /dev/oss/oss_hdaudio0/pcm0

Do you have the "Fast resampler" enabled?

Code: Select all
$ ossmix | grep Fast
vmix0-src <Fast|High|High+|Production|OFF> (currently OFF)

If the Fast resampler is enabled, you must have rather strong distortions.
It is enabled by default to make OSS4 sound like ALSA, or even worse.

If you are not deaf, you may want to disable resampling:

Code: Select all
$ ossmix vmix0-src OFF
Value of mixer control vmix0-src set to OFF
$ ossmix | grep Fast
vmix0-src <Fast|High|High+|Production|OFF> (currently OFF)

The distortion is pretty heavy yes, so I keep volume on minimal for testing purposes.
but disabling the resampling unfortunately doesn`t make a difference in distortion. It remains in the same source and levels..

i`m sorry to say that I have no clue about what settings of OSS can be configured. I`m dependent only on your insight so thanks for trying to help out..

here is a full ossmix output if it helps:

Code: Select all
ossmix

I found an edition of gsdtreamer on http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src/gs ... ns-good/... but after running "./configure", the "make" command does not execute well.. I get

Code: Select all
make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop.

BTW: I`m running Mint 14 with Cinnamon

but disabling the resampling unfortunately doesn`t make a difference in distortion. It remains in the same source and levels..

i`m sorry to say that I have no clue about what settings of OSS can be configured. I`m dependent only on your insight so thanks for trying to help out..

here is a full ossmix output if it helps:

Code: Select all
ossmix

You may to find the source of noise with

Code: Select all
$ osstest

and
Code: Select all
$ osstest -V

If you get noise, try to lower and/or mute some volume controls, until you find the source of the noise.

Is it a notebook?

I did not know this. You may better stay with PulseALSA.

You may not need to compile "gst-plugins-good", because everything is available in the standard repositories (i386 and amd64/x86-64):
http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/gstr ... ugins-good
http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/gstr ... ugins-good

To make gstreamer apps work with OSS4 on Linux Mint 14, you can simply install two packages:

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-plugins-good
$ sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good

I have here Linux Mint 14 Mate (i386). Gstreamer seems to work "out of the box" (if it is correctly installed).

Can't speak for Mint, but on Arch gstreamer definitely needs to be configured https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OS ... _GStreamer in gstreamer-properties.

1. Cesium claimed that gstreamer should now work "out of the box" without configuration. It seems that it does. It does not contradict my experience with Linux Mint 14 Mate. This, however, may requires verification.

2. Arch Linux Wiki is not a reliable source of "technical information". It is outdated, incomplete, and often misleading.

3. Some of the gstreamer settings can be configured with "gstreamer-properties" or "mate-gstreamer-properties".

4. Some other settings of gstreamer (including those which are not mentioned in Arch Linux Wiki) can be fixed with "gconf-editor" or "mateconf-editor", for example:

Code: Select all
/desktop/gnome/sound/default_mixer_device
/desktop/gnome/sound/default_mixer_tracks
/desktop/mate/sound/default_mixer_device
/desktop/mate/sound/default_mixer_tracks

If you do not know the proper values for these keys, you are out of luck.
See also: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting
gnome-sound-properties could do the work, but it was "deprecated" by the notorious advocate of "Microsoft technologies" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miguel_de ... chnologies

5. There were tools and patches which had already been "deprecated" in Arch Linux and Ubuntu. Both "gstreamer-properties" and "mate-gstreamer-properties" (as well as "gconf-editor" or "mateconf-editor") cannot set everything right. That is why Temüjin created a magic script in 2009. You may find this thread on the forum http://www.4front-tech.com/forum/viewto ... 324#p13408
The magic script is available here: http://www.4front-tech.com/wiki/index.p ... #gstreamer It does not solve all problems but it is very helpful.

mate-settings-daemon-gstreamer is not likely to be patched to support notification with multimedia keys. This can be verified.
The multimedia keys seem to work with OSS4 on Linux Mate 13 LTS (without notification).

EDIT:
mate-settings-daemon-gstreamer is indeed patched to support notification with multimedia keys.
It works, but it seems to be extremely buggy, especially with Intel HDA codecs.
It is usable with old AC'97 codecs.
For Intel HDA codecs, you may prefer "custom keys" without notification.
