The problem is the nVidia driver. Try it without loading it and it will work.

sorry for the late reply.

Thanks for your answer. I'm using FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE now, disabled the nvidia kernel module and - voila - it works. Works great. Even MIDI.

But then I can't use my Nvidia graphics card and use accelerated X-Window-System.

So, to get both, I first loaded the oss module, then the nvidia module, but then sound is disabled again. dmesg brought: "Envy24: Output timed out"

So, have I to choice between either sound or 3D? Can't be a solution, or? Any ideas?

I have the same problem. Currently I switched the driver for X.org to the standard vesa one so that I do not have to use the driver which NVidia provides. My problem is that I am not sure who to blame for the problems: NVidia (who made the graphics driver), 4Front (who made OSS) or the FreeBSD programmers (who are responsible for the code for correct assignment of DMA, IRQ etc.)... So if anyone could help, I would *really* appreciate it... Watching movies via Mplayer with the vesa driver isn't fun at all...

Looks like a memory allocation problem that both Nvidia and OSS suffer from. Personally I think it's a freebsd issue - however we'll try to see if there's a fix to the problem.


We'll configure Nvidia's driver with our Audiophile 2496 and see what can be done.

it's very cool that you guys are still there, although this thread is very old. Thanks alot for that.

Ok, dev, please try that with FreeBSD 5.3 and FreeBSD 4.10 if the problem exists on both systems. I can't test both systems 'cause FreeBSD 4.10 has got problems with my harddisk.

So I also think that's a problem (bug) of the OS and neither NVidia nor OSS. A quick patch for the OS sources would be cool.

OK, the problem is now fixed and has been verified for FreeBSD 5.3 with Nvidia + delta 44 (envy24) device and it's all working now. Please run ossupdate (if hyou're running 5.3-RELEASE) or download the latest build of 3.99.2b at our website.

No matter whether ACPI is enabled or disabled. Even disabling nvidia lernel module doesn't help any more.

VIA bought ICE Ensemble and that's the same chips used in the Maudio delta cards.

Perhaps a bug in the OS? Perhaps the reason why OSS can't find the soundcard?

@kpanic: What FreeBSD version do you use now? 5.4-PRERELEASE?

How much RAM do you have in the system?. I wonder if it's something to do with low-memory?. The ICE cards can only access 30bits of Memory space so they have to use ISA BUS memory allocation.

All delta cards - Delta 1010, Delta 44 and Audiophile 2496 run off the same driver.

How much RAM do you have in the system?.

I've got 1024MB of RAM and 2048MB of virtual swap space.
